Hague Dress

Project type

Hand-dyed dress, including watercolor, thread painting, and beadwork

Date

July 2026

Location

The Netherlands

This dress is inspired by The Hague (Den Haag), specifically the forces and creatures that were already present when humans came to inhabit the place. Storks and herring are cherished symbols in Den Haag and the beach district of Scheveningen. Storks are meant to bring good luck, and were welcomed at fish markets, where they helped keep the area clean. Herring are a significant food source, and are part of the Vlaggetjesdag (Flag Day) festival at the beginning of herring season.

Even before the herring and the storks, the moon and tides were present, forming the coastal landscape of Den Haag.
